Upper Peninsula soldier is killed in Afghanistan
Comments 0 | Recommend 0SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. (AP) - A soldier from the Upper Peninsula reportedly has been killed in Afghanistan.
The Evening News of Sault Ste. Marie, WPBN-TV in Traverse City and WLUC-TV in Marquette say Army Spc. Brandon Steffey died Sunday in a roadside bombing. The 23-year-old was on his second tour of duty as a combat tracking dog handler.
Messages seeking more details were left early Wednesday at Fort Hood, Texas, where Steffey was based. The Evening News says his survivors include a wife and daughter.
The newspaper says Steffey grew up in Sault Ste. Marie, graduated from nearby Brimley High School in 2005 and joined the Army the following year.
Sault Area High School principal John Sherry says staffers are organizing a memorial service for Steffey. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
