The Psychological Effects of a Restricted Diet and the Parent-Child Relationship

By: Judy Brady PhD, Child Psychologist: MSU, Sparrow Health System

Tuesday March 25th at 7pm.

Community of Christ, 1512 W. Miller rd. (On Miller Rd between Washington St and Martin Luther King Blvd)

Parents and children on any restricted diet such as diabetes, allergies, PKU, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's, etc. are welcome.

Food is the sustenance of life. It is instinctive for all mothers to feed their children.

What happens when normal food causes problems for the child? When do parents become overprotective? When does the stress become overwhelming?

What does one do with the toddler standing by the cupboard, "Cracker, Cracker" but the cracker will cause him/her to become ill? Does the toddler understand?

What about the eight year old who is diabetic and cannot eat candy from a class party?

What about the teenager who wants to go to a pizza party with the team but cannot have any wheat? How does one tell their mother-in-law they can not eat that wonderful casserole because it contains wheat flour?

How about the wedding parties? Other family get-togethers?

How does one speak to the feelings of the 80 year old grandmother who cannot giver her grandchild a cookie?

All of these issues will be discussed.

It will display all of your contributions and allow you to track issues and easily connect with others.

We want our site to be a place where people discuss and debate ideas that foster stronger communities. We built this for you. Please take care of it. Tolerate broad thinking, but take action against obscene or hateful material. Make it a credible and safe place worth preserving and sharing.
