Lawyer to draft forfeiture language against Detroit mayor
DETROIT (AP) - The Detroit City Council has voted 5-4 to ask its attorney to draft resolution language on forfeiture of office proceedings against Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick.
Council members debated Monday morning on three recommendations made by lawyer William Goodman.
The recommendations included asking Governor Jennifer Granholm to remove Kilpatrick for misconduct in office, censuring the mayor and forfeiture.
Goodman is expected to return Monday afternoon with the draft, and the Council could vote on it as early as Tuesday.
Council members say they were misled in approving an $8.4 million whistle-blowers' settlement because they were not told of a confidentiality agreement referencing sexually explicit text messages between the mayor and his former top aide.
