New stamp commemorating Mighty Mac to be unveiled
Comments 0 | Recommend 0ST. IGNACE, Mich. (AP) - Postal customers across the country soon will get a seagull's-eye view of one of Michigan's most famous landmarks.
The Mackinac Bridge Authority and the Michigan Department of Transportation are unveiling a Priority Mail stamp commemorating the bridge at a Wednesday morning ceremony at Bridge View Park in St. Ignace.
The new stamp costs $4.90.
Artist Dan Cosgrove used panoramic photographs to create the stamp artwork featuring seagulls flying around the bridge's two towers and a large ship passing underneath.
According to the www.mightymac.org Web site, the first U.S. postage stamp devoted to the Mackinac Bridge was a 3-cent stamp issued June 25, 1958 to celebrate the November 1957 opening of the five-mile-long bridge.
