A financial literacy course could soon fulfill the math requirements needed for high school graduation.

The state house unanimously approved the bill on Tuesday. It has already passed the senate, and will be returned for approval before heading to Governor Jennifer Granholm's desk.

Many feel the new requirement will work well for some students looking for other math options.

"Financial literacy is a 4th option for high school graduation," says Martin Ackley, from the Department of Education. "What it does is emphasizes the importance of financial literacy in our students educations."

The bill also would allow students to complete algebra 2 over a two year period with each year counting as a credit.

The graduation requirements start with the graduating class of 2011, and will require four math credits.
