One Dead, Two Behind Bars After Lansing Shooting

July 9, 2009 - 5:56 PM

Around 8 pm Wednesday night police were called to shots fired in South Lansing that eventually lead to a police chase and the arrest of two local men.

A beautiful summer evening at Moores Park here in Lansing disrupted by a roaring police chase and all was witnessed by Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero who was attending a neighborhood association meeting in the park

" A number of these guys jumped out of the car- there was one police officer he stayed in the car and followed the car through the park."

The man police pursued at Moores Park is a 21-year-old man accused of shooting and killing a 28-year-old Lansing man Wednesday night in a South Lansing neighborhood and when police responded to the scene they found no victim and no suspects, but hours later they discoved a body in Frances Park and put the pieces together

"They did everything wonderfully tying all these incidents together and figuring out that it was all one incident they did a fantastic job with this investigation"

Mayor Bernero watched as a Lansing police officer wrestled the suspect to the ground and handcuffed him, but he says this incident doesnt say anything about safety in Lansing

"Obviously we wish there was no crime but the fact is its eveywhere its no more in Lansing, we know the stats were actually enjoying a reduction in crime this year its slightly down."

Bernero attributes this to hard work in balancing the budget and a tough force that deters crime.

"The things we've done to keep this city safe, as you know in tough economic times, we havent cut police, we've added police and that tells you were a force to be rekoned with."

Police are continuing to investigate Wednesday night's shooting.

They expect to relase the names of both the victim and the suspects soon.

Anyone who has additional information on the incident are asked to call the Lansing police at (517) 483 4600.
