Man's Body Found in Lake

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) _ Authorities have recovered the body of an East Lansing man who disappeared while trying to help his granddaughter, who fell off a boat in Lake Michigan's Grand Traverse Bay.

The Grand Traverse County sheriff's department says 61-year-old Robert Smith jumped into the water Saturday evening after the girl fell in during a fishing excursion.

The child was rescued, but Smith lost his grip from the boat and slipped beneath the surface.

State police divers used sonar and a remotely operated submersible device to search for Smith. His body was located Monday night at a depth of about 130 feet and was recovered Tuesday morning.
