Michigan announces 13 school innovation districts
Comments 0 | Recommend 0LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan schools officials have selected 13 districts that could get new initiatives paid for if the state wins competitive grants from the federal stimulus program.
The first Project ReImagine winners announced Thursday include Armada, Farwell, Oxford and Utica school districts. Among the initiatives is teaching Mandarin Chinese.
Detroit schools would work with teachers' unions to develop a school-based bonus system. A Grand Rapids plan includes career-focused high schools.
Others districts include Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District, Mason-Lake ISD, Saginaw ISD, Battle Creek Lakeview, Comstock, NICE Community School in Ishpeming and University Preparatory Academy in Detroit.
The projects may be included in a state application for federal money due in January.
