Teens Without Jobs
It's no secret that the economy in Michigan is in bad shape, and it's not just auto workers trying to make ends meet. As the economy gets worse everyone is trying to do more with less, and that is making it harder to find a job.
Zeus Coney Island of Lansing employee, Nicole Edmonds, had this to say, "Nobody wants to hire new people because nobody has any money to pay."
Edmonds has been waitressing at the restaraunt for about nine months. She says it's a good job, but she wants more, "I was actually going to start looking for another job, so I don't know."
One of the owners told ABC 3's Bill Albin it's hard to maintain a full staff when taxes are high and salaries are down.
Co-owner Enver Jusufi said, "We cut back on staff a little bit and made some cuts here and there."
Some of the hardest hit are the young such as college and high school students who rely on summer jobs for spending cash and gas money.
Business owners can't do as much for them as they used to. Jusufi continued, "We also try accomodate former employees that are off to college during the school year or work part time during the school year and then give them a little more hours during the summer."
Some economists say things will change for the better, but that is small consolation for the Michiganders who are hungry for work right now.
