Propane Tank Safety

The Michigan Propane Gas Association is offering some safety tips hoping to prevent accidents like Monday's house explosion near Williamston.

First, they say you should never run out of gas.

Running out can cause a serious safety hazard including fire or explosion.

They say you should never light your pilot on your own, and should always contact a service technician to turn it on.

They say the second you smell gas in your home, you should evacuated and call your gas company.

Joe Ross of the Michigan Propane Gas Association said, "Natural gas, fuel, oil, propane, it's all possibly flammable so it's got to be treated very carefully."

On Monday, a house explosion left a man from the Williamston area dead.

Neighbors tell us 66-year-old David Nielson was lighting his propane heater's pilot when the explosion happened.

71-year-old Joyce Dyer was also in the home and was injured in the accident.

The explosion is still under investigation.
