The Fate of Local GM Plants
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Some of General Motors viability plans may spell trouble for GM plants here in Lansing.
GM's viability plan outlines strategic options for restructuring but for UAW President Brian Fredline, local 602, the plans sound painful.
"I guess its a choice between a root canal and brain surgery i don't like any part of the plan however, its a neccessary step towards viability, Fredline said."
One of those steps however includes putting the saturn brand up for sale.
"If its not sold it will be phased out after its production model year which is in 2011 so saturn is gone either way," Fredline said.
Retired GM worker Greg Brunette says cutting saturn could hurt the Delta Township plant which makes the Saturn Outlook.
"With restructuring they're going to be taking a lot of jobs away and that's not always a good sign," Brunette said.
But its not all bad news, the UAW says they expect there will be a replacement for the Saturn Outlook.
"They did assign the Chevy Lambda build to Lansing Delta Township starting in 2011 now if that holds true we should get the Chevy Traverse up here just as the Saturn Outlook is phasing out, Fredline said."
But for those workers whose fate hangs in the balance, its a waiting game.
"I really feel for them because alot of them don't know at this time where they're gonna end up out of a job," Fredline said.
As GM waits to hear if their plan is approved and workers wait to hear if their jobs are safe- the only thing that's clear is that change is coming for GM.
