Households using food stamps on the rise
With Michigan's troubled economy, it's no surprise the number of households receiving food stamps has risen 53 percent in the past five years.
Nearly 600,000 households received food stamps in March, more than 12 .5 percent of the state's population.
Officials say poverty is common for the downtown detroit area, but has become a problem for the suburban areas as well.
