Fireworks Guidelines for a Safe Independence Day

Local officials are encouraging everyone to have a safe Fourth of July.

To celebrate safely, officials suggest people read and follow all warnings and instructions on their fireworks, keep a hose or water bucket nearby in case of a malfunction, and only light fireworks on smooth, flat surfaces, away from residential areas, dry leaves or flammable materials.

"It's really important that they stay safe and stay with the fireworks that are legal in Michigan," said Sgt. Brian Valentine, Ingham County Sheriff's Department.

Officials are also reminding that "Class B" fireworks, including firecrackers, bottle rockets, cherry bombs and other fireworks that leave the ground are against the law in Michigan, unless you have a permit.

Fireworks that do not require a permit in Michigan include: flat paper caps, sparklers, fountains, toy snakes, and smoke bombs.
