Delta Township Deal
The men and women of Local 602 continue to walk the picket line but that could soon change.
After weeks of painstaking negotiations the strike may finally be over, and the barricades ready to come down.
Local 602 president Doug Rademacher had this to say, "It's been a very difficult time but it's rewarding now that we've got something our bargaining committee feels is presentable to our membership."
It's been almost a month since thousands of local auto workers left the assembly line for the picket line.
That idled production of three of the hottest selling cars in the nation.
Heidi Magyar of General Motors said, "When your not producing of course your not making any schedule and no products are unfortunately rolling our the door so yes you are going to be behind your schedule."
Rademacher says his team never wanted to strike but they couldn't operate without a local contract any longer.
They had been using the old Fisher Body Plant contract as a guide but that document was almost a decade old and he says it no longer applied to current working conditions, "It encompasses workplace rules, manpower movement, vacation, all kinds of things that are connected to that, the trades and just everything's encompasses in a local agreement."
This tentative agreement could be the answer both sides are looking for.
But U.A.W. members aren't convinced yet, and are still picketing.
They will continue to walk the line until tomorrow morning when they will get their first opportunity to look it over. That meeting will take place at 10AM at the Lansing Center.
A vote on the new contract will happen as soon as the meeting is over.
All Local 602 members are encouraged to attend the vote tomorrow.
Free parking will be available at the Lansing Center, the Capital Avenue ramp, the north Grand River ramp, and the Delta Township plant.
Busses will be provided to shuttle workers from the plant to the Lansing Center.
