Sparring continues over Michigan stem cell bills

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Supporters of expanded embryonic stem cell research in Michigan continue to criticize legislation that could soon be voted on by a state Senate committee.

University of Michigan researcher Sean Morrison says Tuesday the proposed legislation has restrictive definitions that would dramatically cut down on the number and type of embryos that could be donated for study.

Sen. Tom George, a Republican from Kalamazoo County and a sponsor of the legislation, says there are other paths that would allow the continued donation of embryos. Supporters of the new bills say lawmakers have an obligation to clarify and establish a legal framework for the constitutional amendment voters approved in 2008.

The measures could be taken up by a Senate committee Wednesday.
