As budgets get tighter and food prices climb higher, MSU is trying an environmentally friendly way to save some money.
At first sight, Yakeley Cafeteria on the MSU's campus looks like any other cafeteria but when you look closer, you'll notice the cafeteria has gone trayless.
"By not using trays we are using less water and studies have shown that you use less water, less soap," said Robbia Pipper at MSU's dining service.
Soap and water arent the only savings. MSU says that by going trayless, they will also cut down on post-consumer waste because guests will be less likely to take food they wont eat without a tray to pile it on. Many students we spoke with today say they're excited about the program
"I think its great, I dotn mind it at all, I know that were saving alot of water and soap and it not that big of a deal at home people dont use trays so i dont mind it at all," said Andrea Scarlett.
But the transition to a trayless environment has been a little sticky. Where students used to put their trays full of dishes on a conveyor has now turned into a dirty dish sorting room before they are bussed down to the basement. Dining services worker Esenet Vela says the new process is taking some getting used to
"I think it'll get a little smoother once everybody get used to it but for now its just kinda yucky ya know, it'll get organized after awhile but its not too bad," said Vela.
Yakeley Cafeteria is the only facility on campus that has given up trays but the university tells us they plan to expand the program if it proves beneficial.
