PETA Comes to MSU
Comments 0 | Recommend 0On a campus no stranger to animals, PETA's in town to make people look twice.
They came showing pictures of mistreated humans to drive home their message of animal mistreatment.
On a display labeled “Beaten,” a seal cub is pictured on top with a picture from the civil rights fight located below.
On a panel labeled “Imprisoned,” is a human gripping a chain link fence below a zoo animal clinging to its cage.
"We show parallels about how animals are chained and beaten and forced to perform just as humans are forced to work in the slave trade, " Dan Mathews, Vice President of PETA and author of Committed said.
But across campus, those who've grown up around agriculture and plan to continue the family business disagree with the campaign.
"A lot of the photos they show are the worst of the worst situations,” President of the Farmhouse Fraternity, Greg Thon, said. “I think PETA fails to recognize the steps that we, in agriculture, have taken to make sure that our animals are healthy and comfortable."
MSU is just one stop in PETA's national college tour.
The banners have been up during the week on campus.
Brothers at the Farmhouse Fraternity call it a “smear campaign.”
"All we're trying to do is carry on our family heritage and feed the world and do what we think is right," Thon said.
The brothers came to hear the PETA V.P. speak to wrap up the week's displays.
“Everybody loves animals. It's just people are unaware of what happens to animals in the fur trade, in factory farms, in laboratories,” Mathews said.
A good sized crowd turned out tonight to listen to PETA's presentation.
The V.P. says he welcomes any disagreement.
