GM Layoffs

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

General Motors says about 3,600 workers will be laid off indefinitely beginning early next year, including dozens in mid-Michigan.

In all, production at ten plants will be affected by the slow down.

A GM spokesman says the production line "re-rates," as they are called, help reduce inventory and adjust to shrinking market demand.

Four line re-rates will take effect Jan. 12 at two Michigan plants, including one in Delta Township.

More slowdowns will begin Feb. 9 and will affect the Lansing Grand River Assembly Plant.

Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero says his heart goes out to the workers and families affected by these layoffs.

He also says when Michigan and the nation emerge from this tough economy, the best cars in the world will still be built by the most talented workforce in America, right here in Lansing.
