Comments 0 | Recommend 0LANSING, Mich. (AP) - A special election for an open seat in the Michigan Senate pits a current and former state lawmaker against each other.
A win Tuesday by former Republican Rep. Mike Nofs of Battle Creek would pad the GOP's advantage in the Senate, which Republicans have controlled more than 25 years.
A victory by Democratic Rep. Martin Griffin of Jackson would help Democrats slice into the current 21-16 majority held by the GOP.
The 19th District covers Calhoun County and much of Jackson County.
The seat was vacated in January by Democrat Mark Schauer who was elected to Congress.
Libertarian Greg Merle of Battle Creek and independent Steven Mobley of Athens also are on the ballot.
The winner will serve the remainder of a term that expires at the end of 2010.
