Senator Wants Michigan Signs to Promote Tourist Stops
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Michigan motorists one day could see highway signs directing them to tourist attractions rather than just fuel, food and lodging.
Republican Sen. Tom George of Kalamazoo County's Texas Township has introduced a bill that would let owners of tourist attractions place their logos on state-owned informational signs near interstate highway exits.
The leasing fees would go toward repairing state roads. Attractions would include sites of historic, cultural and similar interest; natural beauty areas; recreational sites; and shopping areas.
George said Wednesday the small signs would cut down on the need for new billboards, preserving the state's scenic views.
He's one of four Republicans who have announced plans to run for governor in 2010.
