Delta Township Apartment Fire

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

Fire at Waverly Garden leaves many homeless

Shortly before 3 o'clock Wednesday fire broke out at Waverly Garden apartments in Delta Township displacing 43
adults and 10 children.

As families sorted through wet photographs and other belongings... firefighters attempted to recover what they could for the victims of this apartment fire.

Leonard French was at work when the fire broke out and came home to find his apartment billowing smoke. "Theres really no words to explain it...it's there one day and gone the next" he said.

Right now authorities aren't sure what started the fire but they are hoping to bring an answer to the families soon.

Duane Harring of the Delta Township Fire Department said that "right now it's under investigation, we have a couple of fire investigators on the scene right now doing the preliminary stuff."

What they do know is that most of the fire was in the attic and what wasn't ruined when the roof caved in on the top floor  is damaged by smoke and water.

Kim Nowell who was happy to be reunited with her cat was not so lucky when it  came to her family photos.

"Twenty some years worth of everything with my husband and I and with all the grandkids pictures and photo albums...everything that we own is gone" Nowell said.

She told us that she will go to the red cross shelter available at Waverly High School for the night but after that she's not sure what to do. She said it is "like Katrina, when Katrina hit, you know how people feel when they lose everything now...I'm there."

Most of the people we spoke with said they are planning on spending a few nights at Waverly High School but after that they aren't sure where they'll go without a place to live or renters insurance to replace their belongings.
